Canon: Star Trek
Series: N/A
They were strongly effected by major events from early in Picard, but aren't tied to the series.
Year: 2408
Content Warnings: Angst, Attempted Murder
Species: Synth
Age: 30
*Mental maturity may be more than that, emotional/appearance is much closer to ~19
Gender: Non-Binary
Sexuality: TBD
Appearance
Height: 5'2"
Hair: They have dark auburn hair that floofs readily, the front lies to the side of their face and goes past their nose, the back is relatively short
Eyes: Yellow.
Complexion: Pale with neutral undertones
General body type: Small. They have no real height or bulk
Other defining physical traits: Very visible freckles.
Favorite physical trait: The freckles (They were a suggestion from Khell)
Least favorite physical trait: They have customized the entire thing and change it if something comes up they don't like. (But I suppose actually wanting a real body would count)
Personality
Positive traits: Analytical, caring, calm in a crisis (unless directly in danger)
What do THEY consider to be their best trait?: Their sense of humor(Which of course they don't have, everyone knows computers have no emotions (: )
Negative traits: Arrogant, they think they have calculated everything and can't be wrong, impulsive and too proud to admit even when they know they made a mistake, 90% fight 0% flight and 10% smart alec in a crisis where THEY are directly in danger, suppressing emotions so much can lead to outbursts if they are unable to deactivate their emotions, petty
What do THEY consider to be their worst trait?: Their pride
Neutral/other notable traits: They try to keep up a very neutral appearance and they can seem emotionless because of this, their sense of humor is dry and can be missed by those who don't know them. They are much more stubborn than what their demeanor even hints at.
Skills: Hacking (look if you are a clever computer it doesn't matter how good security is in another system), they are good at subtly manipulating a computer system even if it isn't large scale. They know several languages fluently without having to make database queries
Other notes: They have the worst fashion sense(they are okay with this)
Likes: Traveling, colorful clothing and decorations, birdsong
Dislikes: Not having enough to occupy their attention, plain rooms, complete silence (ambient noises like nature/engines are enough to break that)
Religious beliefs: Honestly, they haven't really thought about it, but they have picked up many of Khell's mannerisms in regard to the general attitude of ‘be kind to the universe and it will be kind to you' over the years
Proudest accomplishment: They once infiltrated an entire Starfleet Starship. Like a big one. Just to see if they could. Instead of having Khell board it to really steal supplies, the two opted to beam over a couple small souvenirs that wouldn't be noticed for a while, and leave behind a cryptic joke message buried in the system to be discovered next full diagnostic (because why anger the Federation when you can just confuse them)
Biggest regret: --
Biggest fear(s): Going back to a body like they used to have and losing all of what really makes them who they are in the process, losing Khell
Biggest long-term goal: It may be selfish, but they want a body, a real body. There are synths out there with almost human-like bodies, but they don't know how to go about finding them or if they could build another/transfer them over. They would be happy with a mechanical one also, that might be simpler to achieve, but even that is not something they can accomplish alone.
Relationships
Canon Characters:
- None
- H'Naal - A Caitian Pirate. He used to get commissioned jobs from governments and while absolutely a rogue, he looked at Rren and Khell as his children. He went off the grid to try and get attention away from Khell after Rren was almost killed.
- Khell - A Rihanha Pirate. Sort of, she lies like a rug, but doesn't bother keeping her story straight. She cares more than she lets on, and she would die (or kill) for those closest to her.
- Parents/Family - N/A they were created for labor and had no capacity for familial connection originally
- Significant Other/s - None
- Children - None
Background
Rren, J18 at the time, was created along with a batch of other A500 androids. At the time they had no emotions or much in the way of individuality. They were created for the job and did that job without questioning. Each android did change somewhat, developing some basic structure of a personality based on experience and interactions with people, but Rren was no closer to understanding them or even expecting more when H'Naal entered the picture.
H'Naal had been commissioned in his capacity as a pirate, to disrupt the manufacturing facility where Rren was assigned, and of course to loot at his discretion. He did, and in the process he ran into Rren. Rren to this day isn't sure what caught H'Naal's interest, but they know one moment they were trying to stop him... and the next memory was reactivating while on his ship. In a way Rren looks at that moment as their first memory. They still had no emotions, but all the programming that had made them the same, that had meant they didn't question the job they had was gone, and it was replaced with nothing, but that nothing allowed the spark of sentience and individuality to grow.
Rren spent a long while confused but H'Naal stuck around, talked them through the confusion and introduced them to their crew. The number did not stick around long, everyone shortening it to just Jay over time. This only served to confuse Rren more as there were so many other J-units, but they supposed they were the only one on this ship. In the end they stuck with H'Naal's ship. H'Naal did his best to make it clear they didn't have to, but if he didn't want them to, he surely would not have intervened.
After a couple of years they met Khell - a preteen on Romulus who H'Naal snatched up after she tried to fleece the crew at cards, and he shoved them together. It did not go well at first, not that Rren had the emotion to care, but they recognized her discomfort and did their best to give her space. They did not notice the shift, but then one day she asked where their name came from, and absolutely threw a fit when she learned. She decided on Rren and a human on the crew pointed out that they'd gone 'from blue-jay to wren', and H'Naal decided that was that–though to be honest most of the crew knew when Khell decided on something it was probably going to happen. For their part, Rren did not mind the new name, and it seemed to make interactions more comfortable, so they accepted it for what it was, given the source, a gift.
From there the two had a much more comfortable relationship, Rren helped teach Khell basics of languages and helped bring her education levels up at least a bit. She helped Rren explore being a person. There were snags, of course, and their capacity of understanding was very limited, which made emotional interactions difficult, especially when they knew they needed to be a support. But they were satisfied with the situation.
The time leading up to the destruction of Romulus and the aftermath was particularly difficult for them both for very different reasons. Rren could not comprehend why the Utopia Planetia happened. And after that, the stress of what happened started affecting the entire crew. Rren's presence with them was always a bit scorned by outsiders, after that it only got worse and the hostility extended to everyone.
Assassins came after them when it was just Khell and Rren on a job. It very nearly ended them both, but H'Naal was able to save them. If he hadn't been hoping to one day find Rren a better body, he likely would not have been able to. But he was, and he had a computer with programming built up to store Rren and allow them to function.
After both Khell and Rren had recovered and settled in, H'Naal called the crew together, short Rren, and explained what happened and why that meant they should split off from each other. And then he left, leaving Khell his old ship where Rren now lived. They kept some passing contact at first, but mostly he wanted to get eyes off Khell in case anyone suspected he'd succeeded at saving Rren.
Rren had a learning curve with the new format, but they focused on getting past that while Khell recovered. In addition to overall expanded capacity, this programming included a capacity for emotions, but they were hesitant to use it while they got used to their new format first. And even then, they would shut it off when needed, or at least mute it. Even without a body, they grew tremendously in this format, exploring themself and their relationship with the world around them. After some time they decided the gender format they'd originally had didn't really fit, making trials of it until they decided on something that did. And in general they gradually modified their appearance. They will always keep the yellow eyes though.
Left to themselves Rren and Khell mostly explored. They didn't take any commissioned jobs, mostly information theft and scavenging, though they would steal more if the opportunity presented itself. But they mostly tried to keep off the radar. Sometimes Rren dragged Khell into rescue missions, especially in the past few years. If they happened to sneak some spoils in the process, well, even better.
